Pelican Island Wildlife Festival

The 20th Annual Pelican Island Wildlife Festival will take place on Saturday, March 17, 2012, at Riverview Park in Sebastian, FL. This year's festival will also celebrate the 109th birthday of the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge. Many exhibitors like the shady sidewalks of Riverview Park, including arts & crafts, environmental, and food vendors. Live wildlife shows feature birds of prey and reptiles. Parking, admission and events in the park are all free. Pelican Island tours by pontoon boat are available, suggested donation for this is $15. There will also be live music, and educational activities and games for children, as well as a photography contest. "Teddy Roosevelt" will be the MC, in the person of Joe Weigand. All proceeds will support the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge.

Outings Leader Suzanne Valencia Recognized in "Sierra" Magazine

Outings Leader, Suzanne Valencia, is featured in the current (January/February 2012) issue of the national Sierra Club's magazine, "Sierra," where she is recognized for leading national service outings to California, the Southwest, the Southeast, and nearby Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge, where she has been leading service outings for over a decade! In between these trips and caring for her own all-native, no-grass yard, with 6 rain barrels and 3 rain gardens, Suzanne is also Senior Outings Leader for our own Turtle Coast Group, leading several local outings each year, including a very recent one for us to Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge and the Barrier Island Center.

Saturday, April 28^th-Tosohatchee hike in East Orange County. We will meet at 9:00 am to hike a 5 mile loop. The area consists of meandering creeks, lush cabbage palm hammocks, slash pine flatwoods, cypress swamps, and freshwater marshes form an integral part of the 3600-square-mile St. Johns River watershed. We will learn about the abundance of birds, both resident and migratory, and wildlife such as white-tailed deer, bobcat, fox squirrel, alligators, and otters. Bromeliads and orchids festoon tree trunks and limbs, ferns carpet the hammocks, and wildflowers such as spring blooming irises add swaths of color to the landscape. Friday, May 11^th-Sunset paddle from Captain Hiram’s restaurant in Sebastian. We will meet at 6:00pm for a leisurely paddle around the Lagoon. Afterward, we’ll have dinner at the restaurant. Bring your kayak with personal flotation device or rent kayaks from Kayaks Etc located at the restaurant. Call 772-202-0220 to make your kayak reservation.
