Come experience an underwater, electric-green light show courtesy of billions of plankton. August marks the start of “Bio-lume” season in the warm, calm waters of the Intracoastal Waterway. This will likely be a popular outing so attendance will be limited.  Please do not RSVP unless you WILL participate.  We will finish between 10:30 and 11:00 PM

Aside from the usual, bring at least one chemical light stick and tie it to the rear deck of your kayak.  Also, bring a headlamp (for use onshore) and plenty of bug spray.  Wear long sleeves, long pants, a hat, shoes and socks and full-finger gloves.  Spray them with DEET or Picaridin.  (Expect shoes, socks and pants legs to get wet during launch.)  Mosquitoes will be present in the Barge Canal.  BTW, the usual includes a PFD (life jacket) and a whistle that is easily accessed (Florida law).

We need not paddle far to see bioluminescence but moving makes it a little harder on the bugs.  So, we will paddle continuously at a leisurely pace for nearly all the time on the water.

We are launching from a sandy beach immediately adjacent to State Road 528 (the Beach-line).  Drive East past the launch area, take the SR 3 (Courtney Parkway) exit and turn North.  Then immediately re-enter the Beach-line traveling West.  Pull off the highway onto the grass near the launch area.  Park cars 8 feet from the nearest edge of the highway emergency lane.  The ground is well packed because this area is often used for river access.
